Carnival Breeze Setting Sail to Europe in June

Once on board, you’ll discover new and exciting ways to enjoy a Grand Mediterranean itinerary, along with tried-and-true favorites that have made Carnival’s Dream-class ships so popular. Whether you’re all up in the action at the Sport Square area, water sliding your way through Carnival Water Works… or doing none of the above at Serenity, an adult only retreat, Carnival Breeze has something for every kind of cruiser.

Sport Square gives your inner champion a place to run wild including basketball, soccer, jogging and strength training. Sport Square also features mini golf, foosball, table tennis and more.

From the 300-gallon dump bucket to stationary water toys, Carnival Breeze’s Water Works is just the thing to get even the most experienced cruiser wet behind the ears again.

Pools are places where the good times flow, and to make sure Carnival Breeze has enough good times for all, they’ve included two pools. The resort-style pool provides the best seat in the house for kicking back and enjoying whatever’s playing at Carnival’s Seaside Theatre. Carnival Breeze’s aft pool area is the ultimate place to take a dip — in the pool or hot tub — while taking in the stunning scenery.

The Breeze’s Serenity area lets adults spend time with other adults, far away from both stress and kids. They call it “Serenity” for a reason, so if you’re a relaxation enthusiast, this is the place you’ll want to be.

It’s no secret that the one of the new fads among women, especially mothers, is couponing. Who hasn’t seen an episode of “Extreme Couponing” on TLC and wondered where one’s desire for this lifestyle comes from? Well, I have to admit I am the first one brag about a deal I’ve gotten from the clearance rack at Macy’s. So I can completely see the excitement these women experience when they bring their two grocery carts through the check out lane and only pay something ridiculous like $5…what a rush! I mean if you went to buy shampoo at the store and paid $7.00 and found out your friend purchased the same bottle for $.50 by simply taking 5 minutes to clip or print out a couple coupons, wouldn’t you be a little miffed you paid $6.50 more then her? I recently took a basic couponing class at my church to get my feet wet and start saving money on my everyday purchases. So get your pen and paper ready, you are about to learn some tips and tricks to get you started on your savings journey!

Now there are the individuals who put in 50-60 hours a week clipping and surfing online for the coupons that will allow them to have that kind of savings mentioned above. I am here to supply you with the basics, not how you can buy $400 of groceries for $5. The methods you are about to read should only take you about 2-3 hours a week to complete in the beginning and then once you get more familiar with the process you should be able to shave an hour off the total.

Where do I get these coupons?

There are several ways to acquire coupons.

Newspaper – These include the weekly coupon ads like Red Plum or SmartSource that come in your paper. Both the “Orlando Sentinel” and “Florida Today” contain coupons and offer Sunday only home delivery for the year for cheaper as an option. If you’re interested make sure to visit their websites for further details. TIP: To keep these weekly flyers organized buy a crate and some hanging folders and file them by the date the coupons expire. This way you’ll know when you need to use them by and when to toss them to make room for the next batch.

Internet – This includes the actual manufacturer’s websites, the store’s websites (Publix, Target, Dollar General, etc.), coupon flyer websites like redplum.com or smartsource.com, likes on product FaceBook pages and other sites that do the work for your like iheartpublix.com. iheartpublix.com is highly recommended because the woman who manages this site does a lot of the work for you…especially if you like shopping at Publix. Just remember to stay away from any site that asks you for your credit card information, you should never have to pay for internet coupons. There are some legitimate websites out there for this, but I would only do this if you have a friend that recommends one to you. TIP: When you find Internet coupons you like, print two of them. The websites allow you two print outs of one coupon maximum. Also, these websites go by your IP address to determine if you have reached your max of two coupons, so if you have multiple computers…think of the possibilities.

Friends and Neighbors – You could ask your friends and neighbors for their newspaper coupon flyers if they don’t plan on using them. One woman in the class has 3 different neighbors of hers that gladly give her their coupon flyers. TIP: Most of your elderly people don’t really use coupons, so if you have some elderly neighbors, just ask. They would probably love the interaction they will receive by you stopping by to pick up the flyers once a week.

How do I use these coupons?

The best way to save the most money is to use both a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon together for one item. Most stores will accept competitor coupons and all stores take manufacturer’s coupons. If you’re not sure if the store you shop at takes competitor’s coupons, just check at their customer service desk. They usually have a coupon policy that they can give you for your records.

The best way to maximize your savings is to use the store and manufacturer coupon while the store is having a sale on that particular item. The easiest way to monitor this is by your weekly store ads that detail their products on sale, or by sites like iheartpublix.com. Sites like these are useful because they will tell you the item on sale, the coupons to use and usually where to get them by providing the coupon’s source or link to the coupon. It’s that simple!

Start out slow by keeping an eye on just a couple of products and learning first hand how the process works. You will experience the savings on a smaller scale and at that point you can determine how much further you want to take this new found “hobby!” Have fun and happy clipping/clicking. =)
Working together for the first time has brought about a whole new dynamic in the lives of Burton and Jennifer Toole, owners [...]

Working together for the first time has brought about a whole new dynamic in the lives of Burton and Jennifer Toole, owners of Amovius LLC, a software solutions company in Melbourne. “You really don’t ever take a break from it,” Jennifer said. “One minute, we’re talking about the kids, the next minute we’re talking about, ‘Did you sign that contract today?’ It’s kind of a constant thing.”

It’s also become something great. Because as the business has grown over the nearly two years it has been in existence, so has the Tooles’ relationship … to the point where they say it’s the best it’s ever been. Great business; great relationship – it doesn’t get any better than that for a husband and wife.

From Assistance to Partnership

“I think at first when [Jennifer] came into the business, she was here to help out,” Burton said. “Now, as it’s evolved, we’re real partners. I go to her for advice. I know where I’m weak now. I think that’s why our relationship is so good, and I know why we’re together. I’m great at some things and not at others – and she’s great at those things.”

The Tooles came to Brevard County from Atlanta, where Burton had owned a software consulting firm. They chose the area, in large part, because there are so many engineers here and because they loved the feeling of the community, believing it was a great place to raise their children.

Burton spent much of his time flying from place to place trying to drum up new sales, while Jennifer stayed home with the kids. “I came home (one day) and [Jennifer] was like, ‘You look horrible. You look worn out. … Is there anything I can do?’” Burton recalled. “I looked at her and said, ‘Are you serious? Why don’t you come with me into the office in the morning?’ That’s how that started.”

Blending Skill Sets

Over the course of their first six months, one client grew to twelve. Six months later, there were 28 clients. While initially catering to small businesses, Amovius can now claim a client list that includes companies like Philips and HP. They recently signed a deal with NASCAR to re-write the timing and scoring system for the cars.

Setting their Sights

Amovius has 35 employees, with a goal of reaching 300. Jennifer now serves as the Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Relations. Now that they have an actual sales team, Burton can concentrate more on what he does best.

“Burton has a truly unique gift of being such a visionary, being able to see and project where we’re going,” Jennifer said. “He can pick up on things and give direction faster and better than anybody I’ve ever met. He works on strategy and keeping us going in the right direction. I try to work more on the tactical type of stuff, from day-to-day (operations) to bringing in clients and business development.”

While their roles are more clearly defined now, the lanes they’re both running in do intersect from time to time. Though they’ve learned that compromise is the key, they’ve also been able to find the right balance between work and home life.

“She’s my business partner here and my wife at home,” Burton said. “I don’t want to say we’ve perfected it, but it’s gotten really good. Honestly, I think the dynamic of making sure that works makes work better because our relationship – we’ve been together 12 years – is the best it’s ever been.”

A destination wedding doesn’t always mean getting on a plane and traveling to an exotic destination far from home. Brides and grooms can stay close avoiding additional costs and hassle and still “get away” by choosing one of these beautiful spots not too far from the Space Coast.

Agatha’s Guest House is a charming river-front home with three bedrooms, indoor pool/spa, wet bar, wide screen TV and a full kitchen that serves as the honeymoon suite. Even a 1940′s railroad bar car, fully restored to its original art-deco glory. Couples can enjoy Port Orange’s scenic riverfront, historic treasures, challenging golf courses and Sugar Mill Botanical Gardens. The area’s 23-miles of sparkling, white sand beaches are a 24-hour playground that’s perfect for moonlit walks or lazily soaking up the afternoon sun. Water sports enthusiasts can choose from a wide range of beach activities. Try a romantic cruise down the Halifax River. Authentic paddle wheeler tours offer spectacular views of the area. Highlights include historic, downtown Daytona Beach, beautiful riverfront estates, and, if you’re lucky, a manatee or dolphin sighting.

Aside from the raised eyebrows inferring ‘you went to New York for a dog show?,’ the first response one typically gets from telling people that you went to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is, “Cool. We watch that on TV every year.”

And so it was after several years of watching the Westminster Dog Show on television that my wife, Kathryn, and I decided to pack up our two children, Charlotte and Robert, and fly up to New York City in the middle of winter to watch a dog show. We both come from dog-crazy families and have owned two – an Australian Shepherd and now a Portuguese Water Dog – in our life together so such a trip came as no surprise to our close friends and family.

There is a reason that New Yorkers spend their winter vacations in Florida, but still the excitement of The City cannot be missed, and we all enjoyed an insanely cold evening walking and sometimes slipping and sliding about Times Square and Central Park.

2012 will mark the 136th year of the WKS’s Annual All Breed Show; the second longest continuous running sporting event in America outside of the Kentucky Derby. While the dog show in itself is amazing, it is the venue that throws it over the top. Madison Square Garden is just as its moniker attests, “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” Sporting events and concerts come and go from The Garden, but the one steady since 1926 has been the Westminster Dog Show.

2010 Best of Show winner, Sadie

Westminster is actually held over a two-day period with the initial and largely final screening of most of the 2,000 – yes, 2,000 — dogs occurring on Monday and the paring down to a group of seven types and the ultimate Best of Show going down on Tuesday.

An almost electric atmosphere exudes from The Garden on Mondays as dogs and their handlers prance about the familiar green carpeting while spectators crowd in four or five deep around the half dozen show rings. This may be the Academy Awards of dogs, but it is far more intimate and accessible than the human version.

In fact, the most surprising part of the show is the accessibility to the dogs and their handlers. On television, Westminster comes across as a very proper and almost stodgy event. Not to say some of that doesn’t exist as it certainly does on Tuesdays leading up to the evening’s Best of Show, but this is a convention of dog lovers and breeders.

we ventured to the floor and backstage where hundreds of dogs were being blown, combed, coiffed and primped. Eccentric handlers, vain and obsessive owners and canine fanatics, the grooming pits are a scene straight from the 2000 spoof film, “Best in Show,” where what and who you see truly mimics the movie.

“Want to pet her?” one of the groomers asked Robert. Ducking under the rope and to the grooming table, our son pets the little Portuguese Water Dog and is greeted with a lick on the cheek. It is the start of a pit tour that has the kids petting and cuddling up to dozens of dogs, including a couple that actually go onto the Big Show on Tuesday night.

As millions of people watch from home, a captivated and sold out Madison Square Garden audience buzzes with all the drama of an NBA playoff game. Fortunes are made at Westminster where owning a best in breed, group or, most specifically, Best in Show dog brings large breeding fees back to the owners and prestige to the handlers and groomers. It is an environment very similar to that of big time horse racing.

At the end of our second day and first time at Westchester, it was a Scottish Terrier named Sadie who stole the hearts of the judges and went onto be the event’s big winner. The next morning she was on the Today Show and on the front page of the NY Times and USA Today.

For dog lovers and fans, there is nothing like Westminster and New York in the dead of winter. My wife and I have become what we laughed at in “Best of Show.” We went back again last year and have already bought our tickets for 2012.

Dr. Ross and Dani Clevens’ Face of Change events provide thousands of meals in Brevard and abroad

During one of his medical missions to Africa Dr. Ross Clevens witnessed the impact Outreach Africa’s feeding centers have on the children of Tanzania — hundreds of children standing in line for food. “It brings tears to your eyes,” says Clevens. “These children, some of them homeless, all of them malnourished, waiting for what for most will be their only meal of the day. The Outreach project is also about upward mobility for these children, in order for them to receive meals they must be in school.”

The experience compelled Dr. Clevens and his wife Dani to organize a food packaging event early last year at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School that drew nearly 600 volunteers who packaged 100,000 nutritionally complete meals. The couple established Face of Change and working in conjunction with Outreach International in Iowa, shipped the meals to Tanzania. “It’s an incredibly efficient charity,” says Dr. Clevens. For 19-22 cents per meal, the food is delivered here for packaging and then sent to those in need.

Eight months later they hosted a second food packaging event at Florida Air Academy, this time to help those closer to home. “I’m sorry to say that I wasn’t as aware as I should have been that there is a real need here.” Second Harvest Food Bank estimates they need to provide 100.000 meals every month. “This time it was for our local community, with a pledge from Outreach International that for every meal we packaged for local residents, one would be donated to Tanzania.” More than 500 volunteers packaged 108,000 meal packages consisting of a black beans and rice and macaroni and cheese for Second Harvest. “They really appreciated what we did. At the end of the day I sat there with all those boxes of packaged food and watched them load up the truck. It felt really good.”

Dr. Clevens will return to Tanzania in April on a medical mission and in anticipation of that trip plans to host another food packaging event in March. He hopes that, as the event grows, fundraising efforts will increase. “One hundred percent of the donations go towards the purchase and delivery of the food.” Last year Outreach International packaged 80-million meals for people in Florida, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Tanzania. “It’s incredibly worthy,” says Clevens.

Ballroom dancing has taken on a new life since the popular ABC show “Dancing with the Stars” hit television sets in 2005. Now, the once stuffy ballroom dance class is a hip and trendy way to have some fun and learn a new step or two!

Say “I Do” With a New Step

Melbourne Ballroom was opened sixteen years ago by Lance Sexton. Then a modest 1,300 square foot studio, today the 3,000 square foot facility includes two ballrooms for private lessons, group classes, dance parties and showcase events. Instructors offer a variety of classes, including lessons for soon to be newlyweds. Couples who want to wow their guests with a choreographed first dance can bring their own music and have a dance specially choreographed for them at private dance lessons, or they can choose from Melbourne Ballroom’s selections. Either way, jaws will drop after the first dance.

Not Your Typical Dance Class

No matter what your reason is for getting into ballroom dancing – exercise, socializing, or trying something new – classes today offer the variety and energy that will keep you coming back for more. Try private lessons or group classes; they even host Saturday night dance parties where everyone can get together and practice their new moves in a fun relaxed environment. Learn various styles of dance; no need for prior experience!

Teaching kids the true meaning of the holiday season

Cathy Ford knows how important it is to ensure children understand what the holiday spirit really is. As headmaster of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy “our students represent a very diverse religious community,” says Ford. “’We try and instill a sense of respect by honoring their own faith traditions as well as others. We believe the holidays are to be celebrated with faith, family and friends.”

Ford believes the most important lesson is to give to others, but that it should be a lifelong endeavor, not just a holiday tradition. “Giving to others is a process that has to last all year. Empowering children to be a part of something bigger than they are develops character. This sense of caring and giving isn’t something that should start during the holidays.”

At Holy Trinity, their Christmas Outreach projects begin at Thanksgiving with community baskets. Last year students delivered more than three tons of food and staples to 63 local families. The holidays “shouldn’t be about what you get, but what you give.” Leading up to Christmas, Holy Trinity students provide backpacks for the homeless containing blankets, sweatshirts, socks, toiletries and a hand knitted scarf made by a student; shoeboxes packed with items for children in Haiti and gifts for the children of migrant farmers in Fellsmere. “There’s nothing quite as good at Christmas as giving something to someone who has little or nothing,” says Ford who practices what she preaches. For the past several years, in lieu of gifts to her staff, Ford has given a gift in their name. Last year she donated to build a well in Honduras, this year they will assist the students and faculty of Saints Sacraments School in Haiti. “Our children receive a great education and get into great colleges,” Ford says, “but, at the end of the day, if they’re not better people because of what we’ve taught them, we haven’t done our job.”

How to make the holidays have special meaning for your children:

- Some parents want to be sure their children get everything they want so there will be no tears. This is an unrealistic goal. Don’t get lost in the holiday hype

-Don’t try to please everyone. It’s the little things that children will remember, like time spent playing a board game or teaching you how to operate their toys.

-Children will model your behavior. If you bake for the homeless shelter (and they help) or if you visit people in the hospital, they will remember that, and these lessons will stick with them.

-Cook with your kids. Over time, develop a list of favorite holiday recipes and make them every year.

-Children can help wrap presents-and it doesn’t matter if they aren’t perfect. Wrapping creates a sense of excitement and is a good time to talk to one another.

-Making gifts is a good way to give kids a deeper sense of the holidays. Going to the craft store, planning a project then making things is a good time for parents to give kids extra attention.

-Children should be encouraged to make their own wish lists, but to also describe why they want each item, to think a little, giving parents the chance to modify expectations before the fateful unwrapping.

-Start your own traditions

-Go to the Nutcracker, a tree lighting ceremony or drive around to see holiday lights

-Open an Advent calendar

-Go to church or synagogue

-Let kids choose holiday music

-Bring out the ornaments and reminisce about each one

-Give kids a disposable camera and put them in charge of picture taking

-Encourage children to make New Year’s resolutuons and share your own hopes for the coming year.

-The best time to consciously create new traditions is when the family has been touched by divorce, death, or some major change. Even if it only means having dinner at a different time, try to differentiate between the past and now.

-Most importantly, include children in as many holiday events as possible.

According to quickguidetogoodkids.com

The holidays are one of the busiest times of the year for people with children. Managing kid-related holiday stress is a great way to really celebrate the season. Ten tips to help you get started:

(1) For babies and toddlers, less is more. They can handle only so much that’s new and exciting without a meltdown. So if they won’t sit on Santa’s lap, just accept it. Instead of forcing your children into something you think they will enjoy, let them choose what activities are right for them.

(2) Prepare just two or three carefully chosen gifts for the little ones. Very small children don’t need or want a lot of stuff.

(3) Don’t over-schedule grade school kids. You’ll be able to enjoy the events you do attend more if you aren’t thinking about the next thing you have to attend. Pick one or two, with input from your kids, and take time to savor each experience as a family.

(4) Avoid junk food. At this time of year, you’ve got more than enough excitement without it. You can make your special chocolate fudge, but give it out just one piece at a time.

(5) For older kids, limit yourself to four or five gifts per child. This is enough to make an exciting display around the tree. Also, when it’s time to open the gifts, take it one gift at a time. Your children will enjoy not just opening their own gifts, but also watching their family members open theirs.

(6) Give your children presents that help them develop their special interests and talents. If you’re not sure exactly what they are in to these days, ask! What could be a better opportunity for open communication?

(7) Solve the problem of hard-to-buy-for teenagers by taking them shopping with you. Together, you can make choices that are mutually agreeable.

(8) Volunteer your services to a local nonprofit agency and take your kids with you. When they spend an afternoon wrapping “Toys for Tots” or giving out goods at a food pantry, they’ll understand the joy of giving in ways you could never explain. Volunteering their time to help others will help them understand that the holidays aren’t only about getting gifts, attending parties, and eating holiday treats.”

(9) Plan ahead for some quiet family time. Whatever holiday you celebrate–Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or something altogether different–be sure to build in some time for relaxation and family togetherness.

(10) For divorced parents, call a truce during the holidays. For everyone’s sake, but especially for the kids, keep things friendly and light. Overlook the problems and forget the complaints for the space of the holidays, and be thankful you’ve got the family you have.

J. Stanley “Stan” Payne

CEO Port of Canaveral

Since he took the helm as CEO of Port Canaveral, Stan has been the driving force behind what has become an economic juggernaut on the Space Coast. Conservative estimates are that the Port brings a half billion dollars into the local economy every year. Though he once referred to it as, “The Little Port that Could,” the impressive growth, both in the burgeoning cruise ship industry and in cargo has caught international attention. Recently Payne was named Maritime Person of the Year by the International Propeller Club, which represents the Maritime industry around the world.

In just the last twelve months, Vitol SA completed its fuel-tank depot with a pipeline to the Orlando International Airport. The 35- acre tank farm can store 117 million gallons and cost $150 million to build. In addition the Port broke ground in August on a new $52.6 million terminal complex which is scheduled for completion in 2012. An adjacent $7.5 million parking garage will serve the terminal’s passengers. Another critical project on the Port’s drawing board is the widening and deepening of the main channel. Having widened the turn basin, the push is on to obtain the $34 million funding for the project.

Building on Experience

After graduating from law school at William and Mary, Payne became the General Counsel of the Virginia Port Authority before he was 26. As Payne recalled, “I moved into that opening when my boss became CEO, being a very young attorney they could mold.” He started out handling legal issues and gradually took over more management responsibilities as the Port’s legislative representative and then moving into project management. This included reorganizing a 120- man police department at age 29 and helping build one of the firsts of its kind, the Virginia Inland Port.

The experience he gained as a part of that turnaround team, along with the time he spent at the furniture and textile giant Bassett serving as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, was far reaching. At Bassett he received “an experience that resembled an MBA,” working with Board members like John Snow, who would later become the Secretary of the Treasury. This provided the knowledge and know-how needed for the challenges that awaited him at Port Canaveral.

Changing Course, Changing Culture

Though people consider Payne a “visionary,” he doesn’t necessarily see it that way. “Oftentimes there are too many ‘visions’ competing for supremacy. What I am is someone who likes to see visions executed, by identifying our goals and moving from concept to completion.”

When he came to Port Canaveral there were two main problems that he saw had to be addressed. First was the overlap between the elected board and the Port’s staff. Payne recalled, “From the outset I told them I would not take the job unless everyone acknowledged there is a bright line of separation between the staff or day to day operations and the Commission.” However he confided, “Not long after accepting the job I called my wife and let her know it wasn’t working out. I felt there was something fundamentally wrong with the way the Port was being run.” He told her, “I don’t fit in.”

This was the second challenge and one that took a more evolutionary approach to change, namely the functional culture of the Port. “When expectations for the staff and for the organization are set, you fully anticipate those expectations being met. However, that wasn’t always the case.” He continued, “What the Port needed, was to be run like a business. In fact, when I was interviewed for the COO position, two out of the five commissioners told me, ‘There is a country club atmosphere among many of the staff; they set their own hours and come and go as they please.”

Showing the Substance

Like the ancient parable of the house built on rock verses the one with a foundation of sand, the proof of Stan Payne’s leadership and organizational skills became crystal clear when a hurricane of controversy recently hit the Port. In what some like to call “Portgate,” one of the Commissioners was accused of accepting bribes and the FDLE moved in to investigate. Payne, who helped initiate the inquiry, was advised by the investigators to muzzle his desire to explain what happened and to exonerate the rest of the Port’s Staff and Commission.

Yet, what would have swept away most appointed public figures, while bringing plans and projects to a grinding halt, caused Payne’s star to rise. During this time, he and his staff continued to ensure projects, to upgrade and improve the Port, moved forward unhindered. As he was quoted saying at the time, “We cannot let those events overshadow the positive developments taking place at the port.”

It is this kind of leadership, community involvement and integrity that makes Stan Payne the obvious choice for the 2011 Business Leader of the Year.

King Center Executive Director, Steve Janicki

The Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts opened its doors in 1988 thanks to the visionary leadership of Dr. Maxwell C. King, the former president of Brevard Community College. The funding for this ambitious venture came from the Florida Legislature and totaled $12.3 million, which when measured by today’s standards, is an absolute bargain.

Since that time, the King Center has had a profound impact on the cultural and artistic landscape of Brevard County and Central Florida. One name that is associated with the Center, almost as much as Dr. King’s is Steve Janicki who has served as the Executive Director for more than 24 years. From business management and selecting new shows to tracking demographic and cultural trends, the proverbial buck stops at Janicki’s desk. Just a few years ago, those bucks were really starting to pile up.

Recession and the Arts

Though nearly every business has felt it, few were hit as hard as those organizations that nurture the community’s cultural environment. As Janicki reflected, “The three years before the economic downturn were the most profitable in our history. Philanthropic giving was up and we were scheduling some of the best shows the Center has hosted.” Then came the recession, “Our dilemma was that we program not just months, but sometimes years in advance. Plus, to have a major Broadway play come to the Center, we were required to commit to eight shows, which means we needed to sell close to 16,000 tickets per production to stay in the black. The problem was, people were not coming to the theatre like they once did, yet we had an ethical responsibility to honor the contacts we had made.” Needless to say, things got very difficult, very quickly.

Fortunately the King Center has a sort of “Golden Parachute” the Brevard Community College Endowment. It was there to help cover the deficits that would have doomed other organizations. However, for Janicki’s and the King Center’s Board of Directors, rapid changes had to be made to right the institution and not deplete the Endowment.

New Conditions, New Approach

With advisors on the King Center’s Board such as former Harris CEO Phillip (Phil) W. Farmer, Janicki began to reassess their lineup while maintaining what he calls, their “Palette of Performances.” Farmer explained, “the King Center isn’t booking shows that require a commitment of more than 2-3 performances in the main theater, verses the 7-day, 8 performance guarantee.” Therefore, “we will have to forego some blockbuster Broadway touring shows such as ‘Jersey Boys’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera.’ However we have attracted ‘My Fair Lady,’ ‘Mama Mia,’ ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and other great Broadway productions which can live with a two or three performance commitment.”

Staying the Course

Janicki went on to explain that it is the diverse offering of more profitable shows, that help the Center fulfill its artistic mandate of classical music concerts and ballets, which generally do not produce as much revenue. Board Chairman Stephen G. Charpentier confirmed this, “the King Center has changed its direction a bit, but not its vision. The Center provides quality entertainment at an affordable price. By looking to the shows that best suit the desires of our community, with an eye toward selling the maximum tickets with the least overhead, the King Center has been able to better manage its budget and not suffer a major revenue loss on any given production. Through the guidance of Steve Janicki we have been quite successful in this regard.”

Looking to the future Farmer concludes, “I continue to be excited about bringing world-class entertainers and shows to a world-class performing arts center in Brevard County.”

Nurture with nature Escape reality with a space designed with you in mind By Tammy Roberts Imagine lying in a bamboo [...]

Nurture with nature

Escape reality with a space designed with you in mind

By Tammy Roberts

Imagine lying in a bamboo lounge chair, a canopy of oak tree branches shading the warm sun. Birds chirp blissfully in the distance, as the soothing sound of water drizzles down a ceramic fountain. A cool breeze releases the sweet scent of jasmine and carries you away to a secluded, serene paradise.

This may sound like a far-away fantasy, but creating this scene in your own home environment is easier than you may think.

Growing in popularity, meditation gardens have one goal in mind – to relax the mind, body and spirit. While they vary in style and design, these home havens provide an opportunity for you to retreat and escape the daily stressors of life. The best part is you don’t even have to know anything about meditation to create a meditation garden. All you need is a few natural elements that please your senses and a willingness to allow yourself some much-needed time to unwind.

Environmental Elements

When designing your meditation garden, you’ll want to add components that relax you, as well as inspire you. Envision your most peaceful place and select the pieces that will help bring it to life.

Here are some suggestions, straight from the experts, to get you started:

1. Vigorous Vegetation. Plants release oxygen into the air, providing you with an increased sense of calmness. Choose plants that are muted or mostly green in color, such as ferns, papyrus or lady rhapis palms, which tend to sway in the breeze, but won’t distract you. Also consider adding one or two vibrant species, such as a spotted orchid, to center your focus.

2. Cozy Seating. Whether it’s a repurposed bench or a cocoon hammock, selecting a unique, comfortable piece of furniture is key in creating a tranquil mind.

3. Serene Sounds. The sound of running water is a known stress-reliever, so why not add an earth-tone fountain or Japanese birdbath to your space? Others may choose to include an organic wind chime or pop in their favorite sweet sounds CD.

4. Soothing Shade. Trees generate the best natural form of shade, but if your surroundings are sparse, simply create your own. Add an organic canopy or wooden trellis to shade the sun and enhance your secluded space.

5. Sweetened Scent. When pleasing the senses, don’t forget your sense of smell. It could be something as simple as fresh-cut grass or as soothing as jasmine, gardenias or bridal wreath.

6. A Personal Piece. In order to make your garden complete, it’s important to add one element that you keep close to your heart. Whether it’s grandma’s quilt, a hand-painted sculpture or memorable mosaic, this space should always be a place that makes you happy.

Garden Gurus

Here’s what the experts had to say about these eco-friendly environments.

• Sandy Ball, garden curator at Sun Harbor Nursery, Indian Harbour Beach

“We are all so active, especially children, who are overloaded with video games, school and soccer. We need some place to let the mind rest and just be still. Start for five minutes a day, then increase your time. I find that I’m able to be more creative after I let my mind relax. People just crave a quiet moment to themselves.”

• Shelly McKinney, owner of Elbow Creek Garden and Gift, Melbourne

“While seating is important, you always want to have some nice, comfortable grass in your space, such as dwarf mondo grass. It’s comfy, simple and soothing.”

• Roger Burleigh, owner of Green Gloves Garden Center, Cocoa Beach

“Lighting is another element that many forget. Create an up-lighting effect by using floodlights that shoot upward throughout your garden. It creates a pleasant, warm feeling.”

by Michelle Salyer

Broadcasting in the shadow of Orlando, one of the country’s largest radio markets, Brevard radio stations face a unique challenge ̶ competing with those that have exponentially bigger budgets, larger staffs and a wealth of advertisers. But no matter, talent is talent, and Brevard’s got it.

Brevard DJs also bring something to the Space Coast that most markets can never replicate ̶ an uncommon brand of loyalty. Among the area’s best known on-air talent, a surprising number of those walked the halls of area high schools, know the back roads like the back of their hands and would sooner retire and clean out their garages (no kidding) than move to a “bigger and better” radio market.

This month, SpaceCoast Living celebrates some of Brevard’s best-loved radio personalities. They lift our spirits on the way to work, keep us updated on local issues, dish with us about our favorite reality TV shows, tell us the best detours when traffic comes to a halt, keep us safe in the face of hurricanes and thunderstorms, never fail to make us laugh, and often share our tears.

Whether they’re spinning Top 40 or pop tunes, talking hard news, or playing hits by the latest country crooners, Brevard DJs agree on one thing. Don’t dare call them local celebrities… As Michelle McCoy of The Hit Kicker morning show said, “I’m a normal person with a glamorous job.”

Jim Callahan & Michelle McCoy

“The Hit Kicker,”

If there’s one thing Jim Callahan and Michelle McCoy appreciate about their fans, it’s their loyalty.“Their loyalty is unbelievable,” said Michelle. “Whether it’s their loyalty to a particular country artist, their favorite radio station, their favorite truck or their favorite food, they’re very, very loyal. They don’t change, they stick with you. There’s nothing like country fans. Honestly.”

It was their listeners’ fierce devotion that brought the Callahan and Michelle show back on the air in April after it was replaced with a nationally syndicated morning show for nine months.

“Syndicated is not local. Country is all about local. So it did not work very well at all, especially when you took a friendly, heritage morning show like Callahan and Michelle off the air,” Jim explained. “We received hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of calls, letters and e-mails… That shows you the loyalty of this format. That people cared who was on the air. That’s the loyalty you get with country.”

Part of that loyalty comes from their unique relationship with their listeners.

“Once people meet us, they have a connection to us,” said Michelle. “We call them our Hit Kicker family. We know when people have babies, when their son gets deployed to Afghanistan. They call us with these things. Country music is real life. It’s real life stories that people can relate to.”

Jim affirmed, “Country music lends itself to that. It’s about the country. It’s about patriotism. It’s about family. But as Michelle said, you’ve also got to be real on the air.”

For the pair, relating to their listeners is the best part of the job. And sometimes that means showing their vulnerable side too.

“I’m known as ‘the lady who cries on the radio,’” laughed Michelle. “I do get emotional. When we do the St. Jude Radiothon, I need a box of tissues, I just cry all the time. It depends on what we talk about, but when it comes to kids and animals, or soldier stories, those are the things that really get me. I’m not afraid to show my emotions. That’s one thing that makes us real.”

Being recognized in public by listeners is sometimes another story. “People ask for my autograph and when that happens to me, I just feel weird. I’m just an average Joe, just like anybody else,” admitted Michelle. “I don’t think of myself as anybody particularly special… I don’t think of myself as a celebrity.”

Jim added, “People have us sign T-shirts, and I’m like, man, this isn’t going to come out! You’ve ruined the T-shirt!”

It’s that down-to-earth demeanor that prompted listeners to bring back the Space Coast’s only local country morning show. “We don’t have egos. We don’t care who’s funny. We don’t care who’s talking more,” said Jim. “We’re just here to have fun.”

Timmy Vee & Lisa Moldovan
The Lisa and Timmy Morning Show
WA1A, 107.1 FM

Broadcasting the WA1A morning show for the last eight years, with Lisa calling in to provide remote weather forecasts for several years before that, Timmy Vee and Lisa Moldovan have a pretty good idea of what makes their on-air relationship click. It’s that playful, sometimes brutally honest, banter that really often strikes a familiar chord with listeners.

“Every woman has a Timmy in her life,” sighed Lisa. “Whether it’s a brother or a husband…”

“I do a lot of things that a lot of men wish they could do and say,” joked Timmy. “That works, too!”

Over the years, they’ve discussed Lisa’s love life at length, and often joked about sensitive issues such as their weight. “People are so serious about it,” lamented Timmy. “You do what you can and that’s all you can do. You can only smile about it a little bit.”

Lisa agreed, “If what we do makes the average person feel better about themselves because they can joke about… dare I call them, our misfortunes, then so be it.”

This summer, Timmy celebrated 20 years at WA1A, a rarity in the radio business. “I’ve seen tons of morning show partners come and go, but I love it here,” he said. “I like getting up every morning, as early as we have to get up, having that peace and quiet… driving to the station… Just laughing and joking, propping your feet up, taking your shoes off…”

“We laugh and drink coffee, and someone pays us!” echoed Lisa.

Even after 20 years, Timmy insists that attending community events, visiting schools and businesses, and organizing an annual holiday toy drive for more than 5,000 children, is a perk, not a chore. “I like doing it. It makes me feel good,” he said. “But it’s also what radio is all about. Any station that’s a true station for a market should be out there for the community pretty much constantly. That’s how we built this radio station.”

Of all the meet-and-greets with listeners, the duo was most touched by the request of a terminally ill child who wanted to eat dinner with them before she passed away. They brought a pizza to her home and she showed them her collection of Littlest Pet Shop toys, recalled Lisa. They’ve also been known to take listeners with special needs to lunch on their birthdays.

In short, the pair insists, what you hear on air is really what you get.

“We’re more accessible than people think,” said Timmy. “We really are.”

“Everyone says, find something you love to do,” said Lisa. “Find something that lets you be who you are. That’s what this does. It lets me be the entertainer I am and Timmy is the helpful charity person he is. It’s an easy fit that way.”

Bill Mick
WMMB, 1240 and 1350 AM
Bill Mick LIVE

Bill Mick’s goal is to get his listeners engaged in local issues and involved in their community. But the story of how he made it to the airwaves often inspires people in a different way.

“I was a cop for most of my ‘real’ life. I was a drug cop. I was out on surveillance,” said Mick. “My boss called me on the radio one day and said ‘Bill, flip the dial… I don’t know who this nut is, but he’s right.’ It was Rush Limbaugh. I got hooked. “

When he and his family moved to Melbourne from Charleston, West Va. in 1998, there was no local talk radio. Mick saw an opportunity. He met with a local station owner who carried Limbaugh’s show and was on the air with his own overnight talk show the following weekend.

Going from undercover cop to radio jock was a smoother transition than one might think. As well as instilling in him a “sick cop sense of humor,” Mick said his former career also taught him how to listen ̶ a surprisingly important skill for one who shares his political views for a living. “My law enforcement career gave me the ability to look at multiple sides of an issue and make the best decision based on the information available at the time. I try to do that on the radio every day.”

While Mick has his sights set on spreading his brand of talk radio throughout Florida, he plans to do it from right here in Brevard. “There’s a spirit in the people here, very patriotic, very community-service oriented. The volunteerism in this community is like none I’ve never seen. It’s a good bunch of people.”

The author of “The Micktionary: The Words and Ideas of Talk Radio on the Space Coast,” Mick is encouraged by the progress he’s seen on the Space Coast. “Especially over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a real up tick in activism on the part of the average citizen… We’ve got active groups of people now that are attending council meetings, attending county commission meetings, talking with their legislators on a regular basis and making a difference in what they want their community to be. I’m not making that change, I’m giving them an opportunity to talk about it, and work together to make that change.”

If listeners take anything away from his time on the air, he hopes it is this, “You have the opportunity to impact your community for the better. You can sit back and watch it go by… or you can get involved, get engaged, listen to the people who are out there trying to make a difference and contribute your efforts with theirs.”

Mike Lowe and Mindy Levy
Mike & Mindy Morning Show
WLRQ, Lite Rock, 99.3 FM

If morning show jocks have a universal pet peeve, it would most certainly be this all-too-common listener statement, “It must be so nice to only work four hours a day!”

The myth of the half-day workday is particularly untrue for Lite Rock’s Mike and Mindy. “Everything our listener is involved with, we have to be a part of,” said Mindy. “We want to make sure we give them what they’re looking for, every single morning.”

For a station that caters almost exclusively to women in their early 40s, that means divvying up a growing roster of reality shows and an exhaustive supply of pop culture news, and breaking it into quick news bites so listeners can keep up with the water cooler chat the next day. “They love the fact that we can give them the information that they need,” Mindy added. “It’s our job to make sure they’re in the know.”

When it comes to being in the know about local news, traffic and weather, listeners know they can trust two of their own. Mindy, who went straight into radio after graduating from Melbourne High, has been back on the Space Coast for 11 years.

“You can’t say we’re not locals,” she joked. “It’s just home. It really is. We know the area so well. We like it here. How could you not?”

Next February, Mike will celebrate 40 years on the radio in Brevard, a longevity that’s unheard of in the radio business. Born and raised in Merritt Island, he’s not fooled by the lure of bigger radio markets and potentially bigger paychecks. “I talk to friends in markets much larger than this, who save up for five years to bring their family here, so why would I move? Who’s the smart one?”

A shared love of the Space Coast and devotion to local charities such as the March of Dimes, American Cancer Society and others, certainly help to boost ratings and listener loyalty, but mutual respect is what has kept this pair on-air together for the last eight years.

“We react off each other,” said Mike. “It’s never been a situation when one particular person had to have the last word. And that’s one of the rarest situations I’ve had in doing a morning show.”

The absence of big city egos makes for a smoother broadcast as well. “Because we rotate who gets the last (word), the breaks are shorter, they’re more concise, we get to the point and get out,” Mike continued. “You can set your body clock to the show.”

Quick and concise news tidbits are just what listeners to “The At-Work Station” are looking for, agreed Mindy. “We work around the moms’ schedules. They can get their weather, get their traffic and get their kids to school. We know it’s nonstop for women.”

Providing that lifeline to busy parents is most definitely full-time job ̶ and then some. But it’s a responsibility that Mike and Mindy are grateful to have. “Our listeners just want to make sure when they wake up that the world is still here,” said Mindy. “If we’re still on the air, everything’s good.”

Ray Michaels
The Ray Michaels Morning Show
WSBH, “The Beach,” 98.5 FM

For a small, independent radio station and a relative newcomer to the Space Coast ̶ its first broadcast was in late 2006 ̶ 98.5 “The Beach” has gathered a large and loyal listener following. And the station’s morning show host and operations manager, Ray Michaels, is proud to be on the receiving end of what he calls a listener “love fest.”

During community appearances, Michaels is often approached by fans. “People just come from every direction, saying how much they love the music, how much they love the station…They love playing our games… they love winning our prizes. It’s just heaped upon you. It really makes you feel good to know that this is the end result of what you work at every day.”

Michaels, who has been on the air in Central Florida since the 80s and has been playing “The Greatest Hits from the 70s and 60s” on 98.5 since its inception, is quick to credit the music for creating such a strong listener base.

“People love this music. Our die-hard fans have such awesome memories of this music when they were first exposed to it growing up,” he explained. “It was a simpler time in people’s lives. Life gets a little more complicated as you get older. So what a great escape to go back to that simpler time when it was all about blue jeans and rock ‘n’ roll music.”

While some DJs may not particularly care for the music they play, Michaels is one of the die-hard fans himself. “I’m passionate about this music just like our listeners are. I’ve often said that the music of the 60s and 70s is unique in that there were so many things going on in the 60s. It was a decade of change… and the throughout that decade, the music changed along with the people who were consuming it. Because of that, there was a lot of variety back then. A lot of great songwriters were working with talented musicians, producing songs that were so popular, we’re still playing them 40 or 50 years later,” reflected Michaels. “It really is timeless music.”

Being on the radio is another thing the local jock is passionate about. “It’s a wonderful way to make a living… A small living,” he joked. “I’m one of the guys that loves the finer things in life but I forfeited all that to be in radio. I’m not here for the money. I’m here to have fun, talking to people on the air and playing the music.”

For the past year and a half, Lance Stanley and Oliver Burris have been competitively figure skating out of the same Rockledge ice rink.

With similar body types, hairstyles and even mannerisms, it didn’t take long for their mothers and other regulars of the Space Coast Iceplex to notice their resemblance.

“We’ve been coming here for a few years longer than Lance and his mom have,” says Viera resident Janet Burris, of her 16-year-old son, Oliver. “When they started training here, the other parents would come up and say, ‘Janet, I didn’t know you had another son!’ Especially from a distance, the resemblance really is uncanny.”

As it turns out, the boys are more than just random lookalikes – they are both direct descendants of 19th-century statesman Henry Clay.

Earlier this year, Oliver and Lance were volunteering at Lance’s mother’s pet resort facility on Merritt Island, when the ancestral tidbit came up in conversation.

“It definitely explains a lot,” says Belinda DeMasso, mom of 15-year-old Lance. “Then Janet and I started to notice our own similarities – the blonde hair, the facial features. So, we chatted some more about what we knew of our genealogy.”

We are Fam-ily!

Several years ago, Belinda and her aunts began delving as deep as they could into their ancestral past. It started with a batch of e-mails and phone calls to family members, then led to a subscription to the family history website, Ancestry.com.

Belinda used the online resource to build a family tree, dig up old records and discover unique connections across several family generations.

She found that her great, great grandfather married Elizabeth Clay, one of Henry Clay’s daughters, just as Janet’s great, great grandfather also married a Clay daughter. She also saw that a lot of first and middle names were passed down through generations, similar to that of Janet’s family history.

“I think we all have a connection, and it lies in where we come from,” Belinda says. “The thought of discovering a relative here in Brevard County, of all places, shows you how small the world really is. It does require a lot of patients and a strong desire to learn something in order to research your ancestry. But when you do discover something, I find that it fills a unique void in your life.”

Family Facts, right at your fingertips

Ancestry.com is a growing source for historical research

Getting Started on the Space Coast

Let the local researchers help you create your personal path to history.

“He who boasts of his descent, praises the deed of another.” — Seneca

Imagine the thrill of discovering your great, great-uncle was his town’s first doctor or your mother’s great-grandmother was close friends with the royal family.

Better yet, what if you came to discover one of your relatives shared the same hobbies, values or even the same profession as you?

The team at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Cocoa-Florida Stake hears stories like this all the time.

And each year, the connections only grow stronger.

As a way to encourage residents to learn more about their ancestry, the church will once again host Brevard County’s largest free family history seminar this fall.

Open to guests of all backgrounds and denominations, the November 5 event is an all-day seminar, featuring more than 15 classes for participants to choose from.

Topics range from beginning genealogy and using technology to discover your roots to geographic searches and researching maiden names.

In past years, as many as 300 people have attended the Rockledge-based event from throughout the Space Coast, as well as Osceola, Orange, Volusia and Indian River counties.

“The free family history seminar was designed to teach and encourage family history, regardless of a person’s expertise,” says Marlees Dunn, director of public affairs for the church’s Cocoa Florida Stake. “There is something for everyone.”

The seminar will be Nov. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1801 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge. For more information, call (321) 636-2431.

Uncover history from home

Your family secrets are just a click away.

Once you have the tools and knowledge to begin your research, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints invites you to put what you’ve learned to the test.

By accessing the website, www.familysearch.org, the church provides a free, non-denominational opportunity for people in Brevard County and beyond to explore their family history.

A nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization, FamilySearch has been actively gathering, preserving and sharing genealogical records worldwide for more than 100 years.

In the past two years, the website has changed dramatically, adding more historical records and information, faster and more precise search methods and the ability to get help from a plethora of research experts.

In addition to freely accessing genealogical information online, residents can receive assistance by visiting the local Family History Center, 1801 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge, where volunteers have the ability to connect individuals with records stored at the renowned Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“There is something that brings us closer as a society when we share family history experiences,” says Jody Wardell, a past committee member of the family history seminar. “By keeping the memories alive of those who have gone before, we learn from those ancestors to become better fathers, mothers and children. We become much better people.”

Growing your own Family Tree

Researching from the heart: where to start

1. Start with what you know. Don’t feel like you need to know something about every one of your ancestors right off the bat. Start slowly and fill in the blanks along the way.

2. Chat with relatives. Pick up the phone and catch up with your family members. Ask them what they know of their distant relatives. Take notes and ask questions. Even the slightest tidbit can be the clue to unlocking the next generation of ancestors.

3. Create a photographic memory. Gather up the family and look through old photos, especially those passed down to you. See who you can identify.

4. Conduct some online searches. The Internet is one of the most useful and easily accessible tools we have today. Start with Google and see what you can find out about your surname, your relatives and the places they lived. Then see how far you can go back with online public records.

5. Join a genealogy site. Family history websites such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org have hundreds of useful tools and access to millions of records that can help you with your research. You may even discover a family member, who has kicked off the search for you. The best part is, most family history sites are free to join and provide step-by-step tips for uncovering your past.

6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. In addition to providing a template for you to begin your search, many family history sites offer individual assistance if you need help along the way. They can also hook you up with an experienced genealogist to perform the bulk of the work for you.

7. Hit the books. If you need a break from the web, hop in the car and travel to your nearest library and scour their periodicals and historical documents. Or better yet, visit the Family History Center in Rockledge, where volunteers can assist you with your search and have the ability to connect you with records stored at the renowned Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

8. Preserve your findings. Once you’ve completed your family tree, share it with your relatives – they’ll thank you for all the work you performed. And don’t be afraid to show off the finished product. There are websites that allow you to create personal family tree designs and keepsakes that contain your family’s historical documents, records and all of the interesting details you learned along the way.

A Lasting Legacy

Tips for preserving your ancestral discoveries.

So, you’ve gathered all of this genealogical information… What now?

There are a variety of options for preserving your research so it doesn’t go unnoticed or even worse, forgotten. These designs not only serve as a unique memento to pass on through the generations, but they also make for one-of-a-kind family gifts – especially around the holidays.

• Scrapbook. A scrapbook allows you to be very individualized and creative with the information you present. You can design your own family tree using a variety of scrapbooking materials and add photos and documents to your liking.

• Family History Books. Transform your research into heirloom-quality page-turners. You can customize your book down to each page with images, text and other historical content. Ancestry.com is one of many websites that allows you to design these types of keepsakes with the click of a mouse.

• Pedigree Poster. If you family tree is the only thing you’d like to highlight, design a poster that shows your lineage, whether it’s presented on paper or fabric. Hang it in your living room, or offer smaller versions as gifts to your relatives.

• Journal your Journey. As with every ancestral search, you’re bound to run into some bumps along the way. But it’s important to document your findings and the people you talk to, along with their contact information. You never know when you’ll need them again. Don’t forget to include the stories you hear from older family members, as they may be forgotten when the memories fade.

• Preserve your Photos. A picture is worth 1,000 words. But if it’s faded and damaged, it’s worth even less. Visit a local photo preservation shop, such as Preservation Images in Melbourne, which provides digital photo restoration and repair, as well as VHS to DVD transfers. Call (321) 795-0148, or visit 3667 Mount Carmel Lane, Melbourne.

Various dining experiences including specialties like sushi

Treats like coffee, ice cream and candy shops

Separate pools for adults and children or other water features

Larger ships often offer families the ability to travel together and provide programs for children from toddlers to teens

A variety of onboard entertainment

Why Book with a Travel Agent?

The expertise of the travel consultant can help a customer with choosing the right cruise itinerary, the best value (not always the cheapest), and help make decisions on the correct air itinerary that will best fit their needs. For instance, knowing that the location of the customers cruise stateroom is important –they may not have thought about how it might affect the total experience is one area that we are well versed at since we are doing this day in and day out.

‘When should use a travel agent?’ Basic Rule….anytime you are traveling outside of the country or have anything but a simple roundtrip you should consult a qualified air ticketing agency (there are travel agents that only sell cruises and tours). Not to mention the face to face contact with an experienced person where you can have a conversation about your wishes and what your options are.

Ernest “Ernie” Hedges will turn 100 on October 19… or is it October 20? After celebrating his birthday for years on October 19, Ernie realized his birth certificate stated October 20 as his date of birth. After asking one of his older sisters, he discovered he was born right after midnight, and since he had a brother and sister who were born on October 20, his family decided to celebrate his birthday on the 19th.

Ernie was one of 10 children, born in Courtland, Kansas. After graduating from high school, he moved to Cambridge, Wisconsin to live with his sister Grace. Neither could find a job so they decided to purchase a bakery. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was drafted in the Army and stationed in Europe where he met his wife Cina in Florence, Italy in 1943. They were married in 1945 and she came to live in the United States. They had four children, two sons and two daughters, and decided to move to Florida in 1964. They bought a bakery in downtown Melbourne and became known for their sprouted whole wheat bread and wedding cakes, which were decorated by his wife. After 18 years, Ernie retired from the bakery business and in 1998 his wife passed away from lung cancer.

So what’s the secret to his longevity? Eggs every morning for breakfast, whole wheat bread, dark chocolate and relaxation. “I’ve learned stress is the worst thing for a person,” he says. He credits his faith with helping him stay relaxed and recites his favorite verses from the Bible to help. The only prescription medication he takes is for his thyroid.

When his children began asking about their family history, “To be honest, I didn’t know,” Ernie says. So he decided to write a book about his life so that future generations in his family would know their history. “Flowers for Cina” was published in 2006. He also hopes that the book will encourage other people to write about their lives. The book can be ordered online or at any major bookstore. It is also available at the West Melbourne Library.

Ernie stays active, volunteering for the Melbourne Police Department once a week on Friday, taking people’s fingerprints. He also enjoys working in his garden, growing cabbage, tomatoes and other vegetables.

So how does it feel to be turning 100? “It’s hard to believe,” Ernie says. “Time has gone by fast.” To celebrate, his family is planning a reunion including his children, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

“I am looking forward to it,” Ernie says. “I’m thankful for my family. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Linda Bradley, President, Space Coast Cancer Foundation awarded the Priscilla Mack Survivorship Award at the Miles for Moffitt event in Tampa

The Priscilla Mack Survivorship Award is given annually to a cancer survivor who exhibits outstanding commitment in the fight against cancer by inspiring others who have been diagnosed with cancer and who work tirelessly in fundraising efforts for cancer research and education.

Linda is a lymphoma survivor who fundraises and participates in Miles for Moffitt as a team leader (Blood Thinner Team) and, since her diagnosis, works to help others with cancer.

In 2006 Linda was diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the left eye tear duct- a very rare type of cancer. Dr. Richard Levine of Space Coast Cancer Center referred her to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa for treatment. There she was treated by Edwardo Sotomayor a world class doctor and head of malignant hematology.

“I had the ‘god father.’ Thank God he knew exactly what to do,” Linda says. After several months of daily radiation treatment she has been in remission for four years.

Throughout her treatment she raised funds for Moffitt, including making prayer bracelets with other patients. Every May she raises money for Blood Thinners team in the Miles for Moffitt 5k event. This is her fourth year and her team is among the top fund raising teams each year.

After her retirement in 2009 she joined the Space Coast Cancer Foundation as president and has been a major factor in the foundation’s development and event organization including the Daffodil Gala, Celebration of Life, Hope Health Healing educational seminars and monthly support groups. She has also served as a speaker at many national and international cancer events.

“Whatever they ask me to do, if I can, I’ll do it,” Linda says. She considers her relationship with Dr. Levine far beyond that of the patient and doctor anymore. “He saved my life, I’m paying him back. I’m very grateful to him.”
