With so much planning to do, a bride shouldn’t forget to take care of her. Details like hair cut and color and styles including makeup need pre-planning as well! Maura Emerson, independent cosmetologist shares the secret to perfect hair on the big day.

What are the growing trends for brides?

There has been a great trend toward positive self expression in recent years. Ten years ago we were seeing brides who didn’t want to offend so they played it safe. These days brides focus more on celebrating with the people they love the most, so they bring more moxie to the table. It is so wonderful to see these ladies borrowing from rouge trends of days gone by while still nodding toward tradition. Today’s brides are very glamorous. They are knowledgeable about what makes them feel beautiful. It’s a very exciting time.

When should a bride cut and color?
Two weeks before the event for coloring and cutting the hair is optimal; too early, and regrowth will start to appear, yet we want to leave enough time to make adjustments if necessary.

Should a bride’s veil determine the style of her hair?

The entire hair design should be considered when choosing a head piece and veil. We are getting beautiful results by sewing tulle, crystals, flowers, hair extensions and beads directly into the design as we are creating the style. The results are exquisite and truly one of a kind.

What are some unique ideas that you offer?

Feathers, bling, and eyelash extensions are very hot right now. They add a soft, almost retro appeal. Think 1940′s Hollywood.

How can a bride infuse their personal style into her hair on their wedding day?

There is a little theatre involved in creating a successful bridal look. Currently we’ve created festive presence by infusing luxuriant sensibilities with whispers of pin-up girl, surfer, punker, and starlet.

What about makeup trends for brides?

Throw out old notions of “less is more” when it comes to wedding day make-up. Skillful aestheticians know that a little color will make your pictures pop. It’s still true that “too much of a good thing is a bad thing,” and this does apply to make-up, but pure tones in lip color; a saucy red, hot pink, or true coral, will beautifully set off a white or neutral colored gown. Often a thin line of iridescent white or pink carefully applied directly beneath the brow and black or brown eyeliner will provide just enough natural looking contrast, if blended properly.

The holidays are over, no more sequins, festive little black dresses, sparkle or tuxedos. Now it’s back to business. So if your current wardrobe is giving you the blues, make updating your look a New Year’s Resolution.

The first step is going through what you have. Make three piles: items that fit well and look great, items to donate or give away, items that need alterations. If you must, create a “maybe” pile. More than likely, if it is questionable, it probably needs to go, but give yourself the extra time for a second look if needed. Remove anything that is damaged, unflattering, out of date. Keep a pad and pen handy to jot down any items that need to be replaced. Now that you have more room in your closet you can access what you have and decide what you need to update your look. Find inspirations, make a list and start shopping!

The “New” Staples for the New Year:

Wide Leg Trousers

Say goodbye to the skinny, the wide leg silhouette is back. Make sure to pair it with a slimmer top and heels.

Worthington Trouser $29.99
In stores and online at jcp.com

Worthington Cardigan $24.99
Worthington Jacket $46.99
Worthington Trouser $29.99
Color Craze Cheetah Scarf $14.99
nicole by Nicole Miller Michelle Cheetah Print Pump $49.99

Bright Colors

Color blocking is all the rage. But if you’re not that bold, try one pop of color with more neutrals. Add colors by wearing colorful scarfs, or belts!

Caramel Handbag

It’s neutral but still an easy outfit maker when the bag features interesting details

Linea Pelle Studded Tote in Brown $34.99

Mossimo Supply Co. Embossed Saddle Bag in Brown $24.99

  A New Coat

Military style, cropped trench, or poncho– opt for a lighter version and you’ll be surprised how much use you’ll get from it.

(coat shown; Apt. 9 Military Pleated Woal Coat $220, Kohl’s Department Stores)

Just like the fall fashion trends, think texture and contrast when it comes to your manicure.

When the weather gets cooler, the nails usually get darker. Neons are on vacation, think jewel tones and rich hues. If you want a brighter shade, try honeysuckle – a reddish pink.

Softer shades like nudes are understated and chic. Half Moon Manicures- create contrast with a light and darker tone,

Metallics are still going strong like graphite and gold Techniques like matte for a washed out effect.

Bonus: chips in nude polish are harder to see unlike darker colors.

Whatever color you choose, make sure it suits your skin tone. Some techniques are best left to the professionals so make an appointment!

Avoid overspending!

By keeping your eyes peeled for the best deals and coupons you are already on your way to getting more bang for your buck, however the allure of storefronts and ads can draw you into stores you wouldn’t normally go into. One way to keep on track: make a list based on your coupons, if the outlet center is large, draw a map planning on what stops you will make in what order to avoid overspending, then stick to the plan! Make sure to also create a budget before going in, if your savings hit below your budget then check out those other tempting stores!

Other Insider tips

how to stick to a holiday budget and make the most of your holiday shopping experience:

Pack a lunch. Many outlets offer the usual food court, but by packing a lunch you can not only save money, but also skip those lines and long waits that occur around the holidays. If you don’t feel like dragging around the cooler, or packing before you leave, make sure to also visit restaurant web-sites and coupon sites for restaurant deals as well.

Carpool. Outlets are a great way to save money, but some are a bit far from the Space Coast. Bring along 3-4 friends and ask them to split the gas costs with you. Not only is this a great way to save money, but it will make the trip a great excuse for a girls day out!

Check for hotel deals. If you plan on taking a weekend to get your shopping done, consider checking hotels near the outlets on web-sites such as hotels.com for deals. If you are going with multiple people, split the cost of the room as many ways as possible. This will save on travel expenses, and your sanity!

Get ready to say NO! Almost every store you go into will ask you to sign up for special financing options, make sure to get ready to say no, no matter how tempting the offer might be. Keeping to a budget will help you avoid paying off the holiday bills until next November!

Timing is Everything. Many stores offer extra savings as an incentive for early shoppers but if getting up early is not your forte, shop later in the day – it’s a great time to avoid some of the large crowds. Some stores will be opening even beforemidnight on Thanksgiving and the sale doesn’t end on Black Friday – Saturday and Sunday will offer great sales as well!

Dress for the Occasion. Pick an outfit that’s comfortable, stylish and practical. Wear layers so you can easily try on other pieces over your own tank or tee. Wear shoes or boots that slide on and off easily and choose a lightweight over the shoulder bag so your hands are free.

Don’t Hesitate. If you see it and love it, buy it because it will be gone soon. Merchandise sells fast and the item may never be sold again, especially during the After-Thanksgiving Weekend Sale when the deals are unbeatable.

This year’s Razzle Dazzle tablescape display expo moves from the art museum to the Eau Gallie Art District, promising a weekend of fun for holiday shoppers.

Organizer Link Johnsten, owner of Eau Gallie Florist, and some fellow Razzle Dazzle exhibitors give our readers a sneak preview of what they can expect to see December 9-11, and some helpful hints for creating your own terrific tablescape for the holidays.

Darcia Jones Francey & Rita Moreno

Darcia: “You want your table to be fun and festive, but also functional. Your table sets the tone. It’s all about making your guests feel comfortable. The most important part of occasion is that you and your guests have a good time.”

Rita: “Start with one color and build from that. For this we started with my plates and went from there. I like the element of surprise- the feeling of wow!, I never thought of using that on a tabletop.”

Link Johnsten, owner, Eau Gallie Florist

“Don’t be afraid. Be comfortable with what you have to work with. Be creative with different elements: texture, variations of color and shape, all give your table depth and personality. Color is key, and dramatic. If you want to work with one color, incorporate all shades in the pallet, or else work with complimentary colors.

Timing is also a key component; everything takes longer than you think it will. Maybe you can work on your table the day before your occasion so you don’t cut yourself short and run out of time.”

Learn more during Johnston’s Holiday Tablescape lecture and demonstration on Highland Avenue December 11 starting at noon. Guests can enjoy his advice and brunch catered by Yellow Dog Café. Tickets are $50 per person for brunch and the lecture ($100 for reserved seating).

Ralph Sanders, owner, Ralph’s Art Supply

Sanders is excited about the upcoming event. Visitors will have the opportunity to stroll through the Arts District and view tablescapes in various shops, including Ralph’s Art Supply. Each visitor will be given an EGAD “passport” to guide them through the displays, and everyone who completes their “passport” will be eligible to receive EGAD dollars. “It’s important for us as merchants to work together,” says Sanders. “We’re a very special group and each business has the opportunity to showcase themselves during Razzle Dazzle.”

Karas is “lucky enough to have plenty of pieces to choose from” when it comes starting her tabletop displays. “I’ve inherited a lot of china and I’ve created a lot as well. For me it always starts with the plates. I look at what will compliment the colors. I love creating new combinations and tabletops. Sometimes it’s about the colors; sometimes I work with a theme. I’m always looking to convey a warm feeling of hospitality that will make my guests feel at home-and a little but of WOW! doesn’t hurt.”

Jillian Burghardt, manager of the Rossetter House Museum

Burghardt likes to bring the outdoors inside by using flora from the museum’s extensive gardens. “ Using items from outside your home is the quickest and most beautiful way to make an impact.” Complimenting pieces of the museum’s vintage silver collection with flowers, plants and fresh citrus, Burghardt plans to have four tablescapes on display at the museum during Razzle Dazzle and believes incorporating “the natural beauty that surrounds us in a non traditional use of such items creates an element of surprise.”

Cassone Home Style Offers “A Little Bit of Everything” At a beautiful shop in downtown Titusville, tucked away off Washington Avenue, visitors [...]

Cassone Home Style Offers “A Little Bit of Everything”

At a beautiful shop in downtown Titusville, tucked away off Washington Avenue, visitors frequently walk in surprised that such a jewel exists on the Space Coast.

Raul Ojeda and Luis Cardonne originally opened Cassone Home Style in 2005 in Orlando but outgrew their rented space and started looking for a place to purchase. While visiting Titusville they found a beautiful building in downtown, with enough room for the headquarters of the interior design business and the retail shop for furniture and home accessories. The pair worked resurfacing, recovering and repainting everything in and outside the building and opened in 2007.

Specializing in interior decoration, furniture, accessories and window treatments, Cassone Home Style also offers a small boutique with ladies clothing and accessories. Luis handles interior design projects in Brevard and the greater Orlando areas while Raul manages the retail and merchandise in the store including elaborate seasonal window displays. Inspired by traveling to large cities to see what’s in vogue; everything in the shop is handpicked for value, quality and design. The ladies accessories section began with just a few purses in the shop and continues to expand. “Women can live without a sofa but they can’t live without jewelry,” Raul jokes.

The majority of jewelry featured in the shop is handmade by designer Jennifer Garrison mixing contemporary and exotic uses of semi-precious gems, shells, pearls at reasonable prices. Raul explains that the jeweler’s design philosophy is similar so it blends well with the look of the shop. There is a little bit of everything in all price ranges. Most of the leather handbags are under $100.

Walking though the shop’s unique spaces, which are redesigned frequently, vintage pieces mix with new and inspirational ideas abound for the entire entire home — including the bedroom, living room and even tabletop design. Custom floral arrangements, created by Raul, add texture and color.

Working against the misconception that there is nothing in Brevard and residents need to drive to Orlando is a challenge, Raul agrees. But he believes that downtown Titusville is on the upswing thanks to the Pritchard House, the new A. Max Brewer Bridge and other fresh shops opening in the area. “We’re proud to be here to provide goods for locals and visitors.”

A wristwatch’s purpose is more than just telling time, it is one of a few accessories that men wear. You can find watches of varying fashions and price points to fit any style. With so many options it can also be overwhelming to find the right one. Certified Image Consultant Norma Charroux with Fountain of You shares tips on how to choose something that will enhance any style.

Choosing the right watch – Size does matter!

Men      who are 5 feet to 5’7” tall should choose a watch that is a smaller size      with flat head;

Average      height men should choose a watch that is medium size;

Tall men, 6’ or more, can select a larger watch.

Remember if you wear the wrong size watch, the proportion will make you and your hands look smaller.

Choosing the Metal

Cool skin tones

Bright Silver

Summer skin tones

Antique Silver

Warm skin tones

Antique Gold

Spring skin tones

Bright Gold

Other Tips:

Don’t forget the formality of a watch . . .

Leather strap = casual watch

Digital watches should only be worn while exercising, during outdoor sports or activities

A dress watch is supposed to be small and discreet and have fewer buttons and dials

A sports watch is supposed to be functional, easily visible and could glow in the dark

Walking down the streets in beautiful Cocoa Village, one storefront remains prominent; Jon’s Fine Jewelry has been a staple on Brevard Avenue since 1991, and is marking its 20th anniversary.
Throughout high school, Philadelphia native, Jon Miller could be found making jewelry, so it was no surprise that when he went to college he studied fine arts, with many courses focused on jewelry design. He then went on to study at Bowman Technical School where he acquired his skills for jewelry bench work. When he graduated he was offered 3 jobs, he choose the one in Cocoa, Florida. At the time it was TA Anderson, however in 1991 Jon purchased the store and Jon’s Fine Jewelry entered historic Cocoa Village.

Since 1991 Jon’s selections have grown to include pieces from the finest collections including Pandora, Hearts on Fire and Kirk Kara. The store has gone through a major transformation, with a complete remodel in 2008 that brought a warm atmosphere to an already friendly environment.
Jon’s has also watched Cocoa Village grow a remarkable amount. “At one point, the theatre, which sits directly across the street was not running, and the whole village seemed empty. It seems there has been a 50% increase in occupation since my early days in Cocoa,” explains Miller.

With all these changes, some things have remained the same; you will always be greeted with a warm smile at Jon’s. Miller’s goal was to create an atmosphere where you felt welcome, even in an industry that is known for it’s not so humble surroundings. Also, Jon’s Fine Jewelry continues to provide its customers with the highest quality pieces. Miller, a fan of colored stones and opal, will handpick pieces on trips across the country and bring them back to Brevard. In fact, Jon’s is known throughout the Space Coast for their selection of colored stones and opals, and many customers are sent to Jon’s from other stores for this reason. At Jon’s you are sure to find a piece that is an original.

Jon’s continues to give back to the Space Coast. Every month all proceeds from watch battery changes are donated to a non-profit organization such as Habitat for Humanity or Meals on Wheels in a program called “Time for Charities.” Jon himself is an active Rotary member and feels it is important to give back to a community where he says is “a great place to have a business.”
Watch out Belgium, Jon’s is on their way!

On April 2 Jon’s Fine Jewelry traveled to Antwerp, Belgium where 60% of the world’s rough diamonds come from. They returned with a handpicked selection of the finest diamonds for their customers.

Make sure to join Jon’s when they return to celebrate their 20th anniversary. May 12, 13 and 14 Jon’s Fine Jewelry will be raffling off prizes including a pair of diamond stud earrings from their trip to Belgium. Visit for a chance to win.

Got some old hard covered books lying around? Try painting all the books a solid color (we like white) for a big impact on a book shelf or counter top.

Wine, not only good for your soul. Keep old wine bottles, wash them out and peel off labels and presto! You now have yourself various vases of size and color. Group them together for a dramatic look, filling dark ones with flowers and clear bottles with items such as sand or beads.

Don’t forget about those corks! Wine corks make a great filler, write on the corks to remember special occasions, giving your decoration that special touch!

Need some new plates? Don’t get rid of the old ones! Plates can make for a special art piece by hanging them on a wall or using them as an accent on a shelf display. If you are really inspired buy some paint and stencils and layout an inspirational saying on the plate.

Glass candle jars are often thrown out, however if you place the jar in the freezer for a couple days, the old wax will pop right out. Now you have a great jar you can use for bathroom storage or decorative touches. Also, use the leftover wax for wax burners to get the most out your purchase.

Colorful Character June Miller Creates Art and “Junk”

From the moment you step foot into June Miller’s downtown Melbourne Art and Junk store and gallery, a burst of color hits you. Her pieces, as well as her store, are alive with color and personality. The gallery features not only her beautiful artwork, but also jewelry, lamp shades, furniture and more.

June started painting seriously about 20 years ago and opened her first gallery in Salt Lake City, Utah called Funky Junk and Stuff. The artist and her husband, Bryan, who also is her business manager, moved to this area about five years ago and have been at their current store in downtown Melbourne for about two years.

June, who is originally from Guyana, South America, credits her talent and vision to her mother and grandmother. Her grandmother used to take her to see East Indian movies which were full of fabulous colors, while her mother would take her to Carnival celebrations. June swears those visions have made a lasting impression on her.

June is influenced by the jazz music – including the sounds of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and Miles Davis – that is usually playing in the background, and most of her pieces are titled after these musician’s great jazz songs. She says the music takes her into this “crazy place” that helps her connect to the canvas. While some of her pieces can take only three days to complete, some can take up to three months. Sometimes June spends all night painting.

June has an open spirit that allows new ideas to come in. She wants her art to be affordable and admired. She makes all her art so that people are able to touch the pieces, feel the textures and take in the piece. One of the new items she is working on in her store is cigar boxes. These boxes are beautiful pieces that include one of the paintings from her series, as well as ornate pieces on the inside. One of June’s pieces, “Nuages,” was used in the Mardi Gras promotions and took two months to complete. “Nuages” is the first of her pieces to be featured in a promotional campaign.

Visit Art and Junk in downtown Melbourne to see the beautiful colors in the gallery and to meet the fascinating woman behind all of it.

818 E New Haven Ave., Unit 104, Melbourne, FL 32901 (Inside La Galerie)
