The statistics are staggering: heart disease kills more women than anything else.

More than auto accidents.

More than diabetes.

More than cancer.

Fortunately, it isn’t a hopeless fight. When caught early, heart disease doesn’t have to be the debilitating disease it frequently becomes.

That’s why Wuesthoff Health System and the American Heart Association are teaming together in 2012 to help Brevard County women better understand heart disease and how it can be prevented. The Go Red for Women initiative encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, and also action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart healthy life.

While it’s a year-long partnership, some noticeable events take place in February, highlighted by the national Celebrate Wear Red Day on February 3. Ongoing programs include community education talks, health screening events and a steady flow of information.

For more information, go to GoRedForWomen.org, or Wuesthoff.com.

Warning Signs

Chest pain is the key warning sign of a heart attack, but many times it is confused with indigestion, pleurisy, pneumonia or other disorders. It’s also important to note that not every woman will experience the same thing when having a heart attack. Common symptoms include:

Severe pressure, fullness, squeezing, pain and/or discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes;

Pain or discomfort that spreads to the shoulders, neck, arms or jaw;

Shortness of breath;

Stomach or abdominal pain;

Dizziness or fainting;

Unexplained weakness or fatigue.

Think you’re having a heart attack? It’s important to seek medical attention as quickly as possible. Call 9-1-1 or get to the nearest hospital.

Carnival Breeze Setting Sail to Europe in June

Once on board, you’ll discover new and exciting ways to enjoy a Grand Mediterranean itinerary, along with tried-and-true favorites that have made Carnival’s Dream-class ships so popular. Whether you’re all up in the action at the Sport Square area, water sliding your way through Carnival Water Works… or doing none of the above at Serenity, an adult only retreat, Carnival Breeze has something for every kind of cruiser.

Sport Square gives your inner champion a place to run wild including basketball, soccer, jogging and strength training. Sport Square also features mini golf, foosball, table tennis and more.

From the 300-gallon dump bucket to stationary water toys, Carnival Breeze’s Water Works is just the thing to get even the most experienced cruiser wet behind the ears again.

Pools are places where the good times flow, and to make sure Carnival Breeze has enough good times for all, they’ve included two pools. The resort-style pool provides the best seat in the house for kicking back and enjoying whatever’s playing at Carnival’s Seaside Theatre. Carnival Breeze’s aft pool area is the ultimate place to take a dip — in the pool or hot tub — while taking in the stunning scenery.

The Breeze’s Serenity area lets adults spend time with other adults, far away from both stress and kids. They call it “Serenity” for a reason, so if you’re a relaxation enthusiast, this is the place you’ll want to be.

It’s no secret that the one of the new fads among women, especially mothers, is couponing. Who hasn’t seen an episode of “Extreme Couponing” on TLC and wondered where one’s desire for this lifestyle comes from? Well, I have to admit I am the first one brag about a deal I’ve gotten from the clearance rack at Macy’s. So I can completely see the excitement these women experience when they bring their two grocery carts through the check out lane and only pay something ridiculous like $5…what a rush! I mean if you went to buy shampoo at the store and paid $7.00 and found out your friend purchased the same bottle for $.50 by simply taking 5 minutes to clip or print out a couple coupons, wouldn’t you be a little miffed you paid $6.50 more then her? I recently took a basic couponing class at my church to get my feet wet and start saving money on my everyday purchases. So get your pen and paper ready, you are about to learn some tips and tricks to get you started on your savings journey!

Now there are the individuals who put in 50-60 hours a week clipping and surfing online for the coupons that will allow them to have that kind of savings mentioned above. I am here to supply you with the basics, not how you can buy $400 of groceries for $5. The methods you are about to read should only take you about 2-3 hours a week to complete in the beginning and then once you get more familiar with the process you should be able to shave an hour off the total.

Where do I get these coupons?

There are several ways to acquire coupons.

Newspaper – These include the weekly coupon ads like Red Plum or SmartSource that come in your paper. Both the “Orlando Sentinel” and “Florida Today” contain coupons and offer Sunday only home delivery for the year for cheaper as an option. If you’re interested make sure to visit their websites for further details. TIP: To keep these weekly flyers organized buy a crate and some hanging folders and file them by the date the coupons expire. This way you’ll know when you need to use them by and when to toss them to make room for the next batch.

Internet – This includes the actual manufacturer’s websites, the store’s websites (Publix, Target, Dollar General, etc.), coupon flyer websites like redplum.com or smartsource.com, likes on product FaceBook pages and other sites that do the work for your like iheartpublix.com. iheartpublix.com is highly recommended because the woman who manages this site does a lot of the work for you…especially if you like shopping at Publix. Just remember to stay away from any site that asks you for your credit card information, you should never have to pay for internet coupons. There are some legitimate websites out there for this, but I would only do this if you have a friend that recommends one to you. TIP: When you find Internet coupons you like, print two of them. The websites allow you two print outs of one coupon maximum. Also, these websites go by your IP address to determine if you have reached your max of two coupons, so if you have multiple computers…think of the possibilities.

Friends and Neighbors – You could ask your friends and neighbors for their newspaper coupon flyers if they don’t plan on using them. One woman in the class has 3 different neighbors of hers that gladly give her their coupon flyers. TIP: Most of your elderly people don’t really use coupons, so if you have some elderly neighbors, just ask. They would probably love the interaction they will receive by you stopping by to pick up the flyers once a week.

How do I use these coupons?

The best way to save the most money is to use both a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon together for one item. Most stores will accept competitor coupons and all stores take manufacturer’s coupons. If you’re not sure if the store you shop at takes competitor’s coupons, just check at their customer service desk. They usually have a coupon policy that they can give you for your records.

The best way to maximize your savings is to use the store and manufacturer coupon while the store is having a sale on that particular item. The easiest way to monitor this is by your weekly store ads that detail their products on sale, or by sites like iheartpublix.com. Sites like these are useful because they will tell you the item on sale, the coupons to use and usually where to get them by providing the coupon’s source or link to the coupon. It’s that simple!

Start out slow by keeping an eye on just a couple of products and learning first hand how the process works. You will experience the savings on a smaller scale and at that point you can determine how much further you want to take this new found “hobby!” Have fun and happy clipping/clicking. =)

With so much planning to do, a bride shouldn’t forget to take care of her. Details like hair cut and color and styles including makeup need pre-planning as well! Maura Emerson, independent cosmetologist shares the secret to perfect hair on the big day.

What are the growing trends for brides?

There has been a great trend toward positive self expression in recent years. Ten years ago we were seeing brides who didn’t want to offend so they played it safe. These days brides focus more on celebrating with the people they love the most, so they bring more moxie to the table. It is so wonderful to see these ladies borrowing from rouge trends of days gone by while still nodding toward tradition. Today’s brides are very glamorous. They are knowledgeable about what makes them feel beautiful. It’s a very exciting time.

When should a bride cut and color?
Two weeks before the event for coloring and cutting the hair is optimal; too early, and regrowth will start to appear, yet we want to leave enough time to make adjustments if necessary.

Should a bride’s veil determine the style of her hair?

The entire hair design should be considered when choosing a head piece and veil. We are getting beautiful results by sewing tulle, crystals, flowers, hair extensions and beads directly into the design as we are creating the style. The results are exquisite and truly one of a kind.

What are some unique ideas that you offer?

Feathers, bling, and eyelash extensions are very hot right now. They add a soft, almost retro appeal. Think 1940′s Hollywood.

How can a bride infuse their personal style into her hair on their wedding day?

There is a little theatre involved in creating a successful bridal look. Currently we’ve created festive presence by infusing luxuriant sensibilities with whispers of pin-up girl, surfer, punker, and starlet.

What about makeup trends for brides?

Throw out old notions of “less is more” when it comes to wedding day make-up. Skillful aestheticians know that a little color will make your pictures pop. It’s still true that “too much of a good thing is a bad thing,” and this does apply to make-up, but pure tones in lip color; a saucy red, hot pink, or true coral, will beautifully set off a white or neutral colored gown. Often a thin line of iridescent white or pink carefully applied directly beneath the brow and black or brown eyeliner will provide just enough natural looking contrast, if blended properly.

Working together for the first time has brought about a whole new dynamic in the lives of Burton and Jennifer Toole, owners of Amovius LLC, a software solutions company in Melbourne. “You really don’t ever take a break from it,” Jennifer said. “One minute, we’re talking about the kids, the next minute we’re talking about, ‘Did you sign that contract today?’ It’s kind of a constant thing.”

It’s also become something great. Because as the business has grown over the nearly two years it has been in existence, so has the Tooles’ relationship … to the point where they say it’s the best it’s ever been. Great business; great relationship – it doesn’t get any better than that for a husband and wife.

From Assistance to Partnership

“I think at first when [Jennifer] came into the business, she was here to help out,” Burton said. “Now, as it’s evolved, we’re real partners. I go to her for advice. I know where I’m weak now. I think that’s why our relationship is so good, and I know why we’re together. I’m great at some things and not at others – and she’s great at those things.”

The Tooles came to Brevard County from Atlanta, where Burton had owned a software consulting firm. They chose the area, in large part, because there are so many engineers here and because they loved the feeling of the community, believing it was a great place to raise their children.

Burton spent much of his time flying from place to place trying to drum up new sales, while Jennifer stayed home with the kids. “I came home (one day) and [Jennifer] was like, ‘You look horrible. You look worn out. … Is there anything I can do?’” Burton recalled. “I looked at her and said, ‘Are you serious? Why don’t you come with me into the office in the morning?’ That’s how that started.”

Blending Skill Sets

Over the course of their first six months, one client grew to twelve. Six months later, there were 28 clients. While initially catering to small businesses, Amovius can now claim a client list that includes companies like Philips and HP. They recently signed a deal with NASCAR to re-write the timing and scoring system for the cars.

Setting their Sights

Amovius has 35 employees, with a goal of reaching 300. Jennifer now serves as the Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Relations. Now that they have an actual sales team, Burton can concentrate more on what he does best.

“Burton has a truly unique gift of being such a visionary, being able to see and project where we’re going,” Jennifer said. “He can pick up on things and give direction faster and better than anybody I’ve ever met. He works on strategy and keeping us going in the right direction. I try to work more on the tactical type of stuff, from day-to-day (operations) to bringing in clients and business development.”

While their roles are more clearly defined now, the lanes they’re both running in do intersect from time to time. Though they’ve learned that compromise is the key, they’ve also been able to find the right balance between work and home life.

“She’s my business partner here and my wife at home,” Burton said. “I don’t want to say we’ve perfected it, but it’s gotten really good. Honestly, I think the dynamic of making sure that works makes work better because our relationship – we’ve been together 12 years – is the best it’s ever been.”

Happily ever after isn’t just for fairy tales. Just ask these Space Coast couples who’ve shared decades of love and togetherness long after they first said, “I do.”

Married 21 years

Dr. Cedric and Katia Chenet

Childhood friendship grows into a lifetime commitment

They’ve known each other almost all their lives

“My first memories of Cedric are him playing with my brothers, they were best friends. He would come to our house and borrow my bike to ride with my brothers.”

“We were ‘friends without benefits,’ ”says Cedric. “We were always really good friends. I think that’s part of the reason our marriage has been so successful.”

Until they left Haiti to attend college “we would all go out together as a group of friends, but it was always supervised, it was a very different world,” says Katia.

The couple began dating while in college, Cedric in Virginia and Katie in Mexico.

“It was a little awkward at first, bringing up the idea of dating her with her brother who had been my best friend for so long. But he was all for it. He said we had so much in common, dating her made sense.”

“We had a long distance relationship for three years,” says Katia. Cedric joined the Air Force in 1982 and two years later they married. “We were in South Carolina when we married, away from our families. I think that strengthened our relationship right from the beginning. We learned to be our own family.”

Katia, who studied to be an architect/urban planner, relinquished her plans for a career to support Cedric’s. The Air Force sent him all over the world while she raised their three sons. His last post at Patrick Air Force Base led the couple to settle in the Viera/Suntree area. “Katia supported me through it all. It was tough at times but you do what you have to do.” Throughout the years there have been challenges. Hurricane Andrew took their Homestead, FL home in 1992 and eleven days after the couple signed a contract to build Cedric’s Viera office, terrorists attacked the United States and Cedric’s retirement from the military was postponed for a year.

“I couldn’t have done this without her,” he says of launching his dental practice. “She is so detail oriented and I’m notoriously unorganized. She helped design the building, she manages my staff and is my patient advocate.”

What makes their marriage a success?

“We have similar backgrounds and similar values, not to mention we share so many of the same experiences,” says Katia. “My grandmother told me once, if you want to be happy, marry someone who is like you.” Cedric adds, “you need to be both friends and lovers. We have discussions, not fights, The last time we drove to North Carolina, a ten hour trip, we never once turned on the radio, we talked the whole time. You don’t always have to see things the same way, but you have to be accepting of how the other person feels.”

Married 26 years

Jeff and Katie Shuman

A vacation romance grows into something more

Traveling to Mexico on vacation with a girlfriend, Katie Shuman first spotted the man who would become her husband. “I thought what a cute, all American looking guy. And I thought his friend would be perfect for my friend.” When all four ended up at the same resort, their friends immediately got together. “Three months later they kind of fizzled out,” says Katie. “But they did walk down the aisle together as attendants at our wedding.”

After surreptitiously arranging to sit next to her on their flight back to California, Jeff proceeded to court Katie. “He remembered all of the things we talked about, all of the things I said I liked to do.”

Thirteen months after their dream wedding at the exclusive Hotel Bel-Air, daughter Amanda Kate (Kate), was born. Jeff had just been transferred to New York while Katie went from working as an occupational therapist to being a stay at-home mom.

“We were reduced to one income and as a seventh generation Californian leaving my lifelong home,” says Katie “it was quite a culture shock.”

Three and half years later they moved again, this time to Atlanta with Kate and 3 week old Ashley. Then it was back to California before the family settled in Maryland, where their children grew up. “This was the 22nd time Jeff had moved in his life,” says Katie. “We made the decision to stay there for the children. We made some sacrifices to they could grow up in Maryland and graduate from high school.”

Before they married, Jeff and Katie discussed many aspects of their future.

“When we got married we knew it was for life, we knew we were going to make this work,” says Katie, who was raised Catholic but agreed with Jeff their children would be raised in the Jewish faith. “When I spoke with my father about it,” says Katie, “he told me, as long as God is there, that’s all that matters.”

“Our faith is very important to both of us,” says Jeff. “ We agreed our children should be exposed to many religions.” At Ashley’s bat mitzvah, Katie’s conversion to Judaism was also celebrated.

About their move to Brevard County in 2005 says Jeff, who is a senior vice president at Harris Corporation, “we’ve been welcomed here. Coming here was tough, being here is easy.”

From the earliest days of their relationship “we’ve been each other’s best friend,” says Jeff. “We would move to a place where we didn’t know anyone, but we’ve always had each other. Katie’s support has played a wonderful role in my career. This really is a partnership.”

“We balance each other,” says Katie. “ I fall in love with him again and again; just when I think I can’t love him any more than I already do, I fall in love with him even more.”

Married 27 years

Mike and Suzanne McBride

“Trust, respect and fun…it’s got to be fun.”

They’ve been together for three decades, during which time Mike and Suzanne McBride have worked together at four different places including their current partnership in McBride Marketing Group. “We work hard and play hard,” says Mike while Suzanne adds “but we leave work at work. When we walk in the door at home, work is behind us.”

Mike may be the boss at work, but Suzanne rules the roost at home. The parents of two daughters, Suzanne makes sure she leaves work to be home when Lyndsey comes home from Satellite High School (daughter Kaleigh is a junior at the University of Florida). “I had the best mother in the world until Suzanne became a mother,” says Mike. “Our girls are pure gold today because of her.” Suzanne maintains “motherhood made me a better person, because it made everything less about me and all about them.”

Mike says “I know I’m lucky to have her; she is a genuinely good person. Suzanne has inner strength and character that has always wowed me, especially when times were tough.” When Suzanne was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 Mike used the couple’s connections in the medical community to “navigate the best path toward her recovery.” “He followed my lead on what I needed,” says Suzanne who made a full recovery.” “You have to make every second together count,” says Mike, “whether it’s sweating over yard work or wakeboarding or helping a community cause.”

The couple, both graduates of FSU, share many interests. “We love a lot of the same things,” says Mike, “but we love the ways we are different too. We have never said anything to hurt one another – not in the heat of the moment, not ever.” “You’re going to have your ups and downs, but there always needs to be respect,” says Suzanne, who admits to “compromising on the little things. I think that’s why a lot of relationships today don’t work, there’s no compromise.”

Mike admits “we’re not perfect people, but we’re perfect for each other. Ninety-nine percent of the time we made all the right moves. Couples tend to get complacent once the honeymoon is over. Fortunately I expect our honeymoon to go on for another thirty years. Then we’ll see.”

Married 31 years

Nelson and Karen Green

After all these years they still hold hands

When Karen and Nelson married more than three decades ago she became an instant mom. Nelson’s youngest son Zack was four, Josh was five and Chris was eight. “They were very accepting of me,” says Karen, “they made it easy.”

The couple moved to the Space Coast from Georgia in 1979 and opened their Flooring America store during what Nelson calls, “an economic downturn. At first

our motivation was to keep the store open so we could put food on the table. Later it became about leaving a legacy.”

Sinking every penny they had into the business, “I look back on it now and it almost doesn’t seem real,” says Karen. “When we first opened the store we were working 60 hours a week, if we didn’t work together we never would have seen each other.”

Working together, “we did different things, so during the day we weren’t stepping on each other’s toes,” says Nelson. “It was great to have her around to get her advice on things, and when we went home at the end of the day we had something to talk about.”

“Even though we didn’t have a lot of money back then, we could always go to the beach and sit on the pier,” Karen recalls. “Our first house didn’t have air conditioning so we would go to the movies to cool off. It makes you appreciate what you have later on in life.”

When she first met Nelson, “I thought he was the funniest man I’d ever met, and I also thought he was pretty cute. Every year it’s gotten easier and easier for us to be together. We’re both very much the optimists and have always had a similar outlook on life.”

“I’m a lucky man,” says Nelson. “I married my best friend. You have to marry someone who makes you laugh, who supports what you do and always has your back. I’m still crazy about her.”

Their dream of leaving a legacy was fulfilled when Zack and Chris joined the family business. Karen has retired and stays busy being grandmother to her seven grandchildren. “I still get excited when Nelson comes home. We try and have lunch together every day. I always know when he leaves the store he’s coming straight home to me.”

Little did Dr. Ken and Susie Hazlett know when they bought their daughter Megan her first keyboard at age six they were launching a musical career. Soon after receiving the gift for Christmas “I remember sitting with my little sister and hearing a tune in my head,” says Megan, now 14. “After about a year I started writing at the piano and figured out I have a talent for it.”

Since then Megan has written about thirty songs. “It’s a release for me. If I’m upset about something I’ll write a song, it’s a good way to sort out my feelings. When I learn a new song I’ll sit and play and feel good.”

“She’s very involved,” Says mom Susie, “and extremely self motivated. She won’t do something unless she does it right.” While a student at Holy Name of Jesus School Megan served as school president, participated in competetive dance, was on the cheerleading squad and served as class valedictorian

Teacher Georgia Germond of Little House of Music in Satellite Beach says, “I taught her first note on the piano, today she is so musically advanced. Megan is a beautiful person, both inside and out-she’s a wonderful teenager.”

This month Megan will enter 9th grade at Satellite High School where she will study at the school’s Performing Arts Academy, participate in their musical theater program, Chorus and cheerleading. ‘She works very hard at everything she does,” says Susie of Megan, who writes approximately two new songs a week. “Lately she and her sister Kelly (age 11) have been playing together. She encouraged Kelly to learn guitar to play backup and they’ve performed together at Holy Name of Jesus.”

Melissa Vandett

According to historians, the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621. Although we don’t know for sure what these first dinner guests consumed, history suggests it included wild fowl, seafood, venison, Indian corn and wheat flour, vegetables, fruits and nuts. Modern dishes such as pumpkin pie (no recipe existed in this time period), mashed potatoes and gravy (potatoes weren’t common then), green bean casserole, broccoli Velveeta bake and my personal favorite – stuffing – just didn’t exist.

Since the first National Day of Thanksgiving was formally declared in 1863, our modern culture has turned a day of thanks and friendship into an excuse to over indulge. And worse, many keep up the pace until their scales register an average weight gain of 7 pounds by the first week of the New Year.

Here are some tips to help keep you on the right track on Thanksgiving Day:

Exercise on Thanksgiving Day. Look for a fitness facility offering group classes. Often times, being with fitness minded people before you head home to eat will put you in the right frame of mind. And who wants to spoil a good workout? But remember, even your best workout cannot undo absurd eating!

Think before you eat. Know what you want, and take just that.

Remember portion control counts, even on Thanksgiving Day.

Make sure that you include healthy foods such as salad and veggies.

Protein, as in your turkey, will be lower in fat and calories and fill you up faster.

Don’t overdo it when planning the menu. Make enough to feed the number of people coming. And remember, it’s Thanksgiving Day, not Thanksgiving week. Give leftovers away!

Don’t starve yourself all day to save up calories – you are more likely to go overboard.

Volunteer at Thanksgiving. Nothing will put the day and the season into perspective like serving those less fortunate than you.

Schedule a workout on Friday – preferably in the morning. Get yourself feeling healthy again. Call a friend to go for a morning walk. If you can make it out of bed at 3 a.m. to get a good deal on a flat screen, you can make it to a Friday workout!

Make this a healthy holiday season. Don’t just assume you are going to gain weight during the holidays and give in. Stay fitness focused by committing to a fitness challenge. Train for a 5k, marathon or triathlon. Hire a trainer or find a friend who is dedicated to his or her workouts to help keep you on track. If you aren’t working out yet – get started before the holidays. Don’t wait until the New Year to be motivated or inspired. If time is a concern, then start by committing to 10-20 minutes a few times per week. Something is better than nothing and often leads to more!
